ABOUT THE NZULEZO STILT VILLAGE TOURISM PROJECT

The Nzulezo Stilt Village Tourism Project was established in 2000 with the goal of promoting eco-tourism while preserving the unique cultural and environmental heritage of the Nzulezo community.

Over the years, the project has provided significant benefits to the local people by generating income, creating employment opportunities, and improving infrastructure.
Tourism plays a vital role in sustaining the livelihoods of the people of Nzulezo.

The revenue it generates not only supports local businesses but also strengthens community infrastructure and funds essential conservation efforts to preserve the Amanzule wetlands and the historic stilt village.

Many residents find employment as tour guides, boat operators, artisans, and hospitality workers, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism are widely distributed. By fostering cultural heritage and environmental sustainability, tourism continues to be a driving force for community development and long-term prosperity in Nzulezo.

Our Plans for the Future

As the current management of the project, we are committed to expanding the positive impact of tourism through several key initiatives:

  1. Nzulezo Tourism Educational Support Program –

We are launching this program to provide scholarships and financial assistance to brilliant but needy students in Nzulezo, ensuring that education remains accessible to all.

2. Creating More Employment Opportunities –

By enhancing tourism services, developing new attractions, and investing in community-led businesses, we aim to increase job opportunities for local residents.

3. Improving Tourism Infrastructure –

Plans are underway to upgrade visitor facilities, improve canoe transport services, and develop sustainable tourism practices that preserve Nzulezo’s cultural and natural heritage.

4. Strengthening Conservation Efforts –

We will continue working to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Amanzule wetlands, ensuring that tourism development remains environmentally responsible.

5. Community Engagement and Capacity Building –

Training programs will be introduced to help local entrepreneurs, artisans, and tourism workers improve their skills and benefit more from the growing tourism industry.

Through these initiatives, the Nzulezo Stilt Village Tourism Project aims to create a more sustainable and inclusive tourism model that not only attracts visitors but also improves the lives of the Nzulezo people.

Nzulezo’s architecture is a stunning example of traditional ingenuity and environmental adaptation. Built entirely on stilts over River Amanzule, each structure harmonises with the natural landscape, creating a floating village that feels both timeless and inviting. The intricate wooden walkways connecting the homes and communal spaces reflect a sense of unity and interdependence among the residents. Nzulezo's design demonstrates a deep respect for the surrounding ecosystem, allowing the village to coexist beautifully with the lake.

The materials and methods used reflect the community's profound knowledge of their environment, ensuring durability and resilience in this unique, water-based habitat.
